Dear Parents and Students, My name is Karen Ricketts, and I completed my teaching degree at Eastern Michigan University in 2003. I initially began my education at EMU in 1981 and transferred to Washtenaw Community College where I was named to the Dean’s List, the Dean’s High Honors List, the National Dean’s List, and Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges. I graduated with honors in 1985 with an Associates Degree in General Studies. Upon returning to college in the fall of 2001, I was named to the Eastern Michigan University Dean’s List for both fall and winter, and again the following fall. I was the president of the student chapter of the National Council of Teachers of English, a member of Phi Kappa Phi, participated in the University Honors Program, and was secretary of the College Republicans at EMU. I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in computers in education through the University of Phoenix, an online program that is flexible enough for my busy schedule. The years since I graduated from Washtenaw Community College have been full of rewards. In 1985, I formed the Clinton High School Equestrian Team and served as District 10 Chairman for the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association. I also began working as a proofreader at Edwards Brothers, Michigan’s oldest and largest privately owned book manufacturer, and remained in the printing industry over 17 years. I earned the distinction of Master Printer Proofreader in 1990, the same year my son Andrew was born. However, I decided to return to college and complete the teaching degree I began over 20 years ago. Ever since I was a high school student, I have continuously envisioned myself in front of a room full of students, teaching not only English, but also about life. The experience I have gained in the private sector, and as a mother, will serve me well in the classroom. Being a parent has inspired me in so many ways. I am attempting to show my son that hard work in school pays dividends far beyond grades. The strength of character developed through extra effort is something that you carry always, and it shows through in the way you live. I have constructed this Web site for the students’ use. It contains the unit syllabi, the daily assignments, links to research sites, helpful hints, and a page just for parents including contact information. I have established times when students may instant message me with questions regarding the reading material or homework, or they may reach me via email. Because daily assignments are posted, no student should ever feel behind if he or she is absent. Students should simply follow the link on the Home Page to find out what is due in class. I answer my email morning and evening, so if you have any questions or concerns, you may reach me easily at ksricketts@kricketts.com. I look forward to working with you and your child.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Karen Ricketts |
